UPPCS Examination Structure: The UPPCS exam is conducted in three stages:
  1. Preliminary Examination (Objective Type - Screening Test)
  2. Main Examination (Descriptive Type - Written Test)
  3. Personality Test (Interview)

Paper Structure

Paper I: General Studies

  • Type: Objective (Multiple Choice Questions)
  • Number of Questions: 150
  • Total Marks: 200
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Nature: Merit-based (Marks counted for merit list)

Paper II: General Studies II (CSAT)

  • Type: Objective (Multiple Choice Questions)
  • Number of Questions: 100
  • Total Marks: 200
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Nature: Qualifying only (Minimum 33% required - 66 marks)
  • Note: Marks of this paper are NOT counted for merit list

Prelims Syllabus

Paper I: General Studies Syllabus

  • Current Events: Events of national and international importance
  • History of India: Ancient, Medieval, and Modern Indian History
  • Indian National Movement: Freedom struggle, important movements, personalities
  • Indian and World Geography: Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and World
  • Indian Polity and Governance: Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues
  • Economic and Social Development: Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives
  • Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity, and Climate Change: General issues on Environmental Ecology (no subject specialization required)
  • General Science: Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Class 10 level)

Paper II: CSAT Syllabus

  • Comprehension: Reading comprehension passages
  • Interpersonal Skills: Communication skills
  • Logical Reasoning and Analytical Ability: Logical reasoning, analytical ability
  • Decision Making and Problem Solving: Decision making, problem-solving skills
  • General Mental Ability: Basic numeracy, data interpretation
  • Basic Numeracy: Numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude (Class 10 level)
  • Data Interpretation: Charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency (Class 10 level)
  • English Language Comprehension Skills: Class 10 level
Important: Only candidates who qualify Paper II (CSAT) with minimum 33% marks are eligible for evaluation of Paper I. Paper I marks determine the merit list for Prelims.

3. Main Examination (Mains)

Total Papers: 8 Papers
Total Marks: 1500 Marks (Written) + 100 Marks (Interview) = 1600 Marks

Mains Detailed Syllabus

Paper I: General Hindi (150 Marks)

  • Hindi Grammar (व्याकरण)
  • Precis Writing (संक्षेपण)
  • Letter Writing (पत्र लेखन)
  • Translation (अनुवाद)
  • Essay in Hindi (निबंध)
Note: This is a qualifying paper. Minimum marks are required, but marks are NOT added to final merit.

Paper II: Essay (150 Marks)

  • Candidates need to write essays on multiple topics
  • Topics cover: Social, Economic, Political, Philosophical, Environmental, and Current Affairs
  • Essay should be well-structured with introduction, body, and conclusion
  • Word limit and number of essays may vary

Paper III: General Studies I (200 Marks)

Topics Covered:

  • History of India: Ancient, Medieval, and Modern History
  • Indian Culture: Art forms, Literature, Architecture from ancient to modern times
  • Modern Indian History: From the middle of the eighteenth century until the present
  • Freedom Struggle: Significant events, personalities, issues from the 18th century
  • Post-Independence India: Consolidation and reorganization within the country
  • World History: Events from 18th century (Industrial Revolution, World Wars, etc.)
  • Indian Geography: Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India
  • World Geography: Distribution of key natural resources, factors responsible for location of industries

Paper IV: General Studies II (200 Marks)

  • Indian Constitution: Historical underpinnings, evolution, features, amendments
  • Governance: Structure, organization, functioning of Executive, Legislature, Judiciary
  • Federal Structure: Devolution of powers and finances, challenges therein
  • Separation of Powers: Dispute redressal mechanisms and institutions
  • Comparison of Indian Constitutional Scheme: With that of other countries
  • Parliament and State Legislatures: Structure, functioning, conduct of business, powers & privileges
  • Executive and Judiciary: Structure, organization, functioning
  • Ministries and Departments: Structure and functioning of government
  • Statutory, Regulatory, and Quasi-judicial Bodies: Various constitutional and statutory bodies
  • Pressure Groups and Formal/Informal Associations: Their role in Polity
  • Salient Features of Representation of People's Act: Electoral system in India

Paper VII & VIII: Optional Subject (200 Marks Each)

Candidates need to choose ONE optional subject from the list provided by UPPSC. Each optional subject has 2 papers of 200 marks each.

4. Personality Test (Interview)

  • Total Marks: 100
  • Nature: Personality assessment, not a knowledge test
  • Duration: Usually 20-30 minutes per candidate
  • Purpose: To assess the candidate's suitability for a career in public service

  • Critical powers of assimilation
  • Clear and logical exposition
  • Balance of judgment
  • Variety and depth of interest
  • Ability for social cohesion and leadership
  • Intellectual and moral integrity
  • Knowledge of current affairs
  • Understanding of UP-specific issues

5. Marking Scheme

Preliminary Examination

Important Rules:
  • For each correct answer: Full marks as per scheme
  • For each wrong answer: 1/3 marks deducted in Paper I, 1/4 in Paper II
  • If multiple answers are marked: Question is considered wrong
  • Unanswered questions: No negative marking
  • Only Paper I marks are counted for Prelims merit list
  • Paper II is qualifying (minimum 33% = 66 marks required)

Main Examination

  • General Hindi: Qualifying only (minimum marks required, not added to merit)
  • All Other Papers: Marks are added to final merit
  • Answer Format: Descriptive/essay type answers
  • Evaluation: Based on content, structure, presentation, language, and examples
